Compare Broadband Plans

 

 

 

Broadband Internet is attracting thousands of new customers every day, but most aren't even sure what they are buying. 

 

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) says that any Internet connection that is faster then 200 Kilobits per second (Kbps) is considered broadband.  That is 4 times faster then dial up internet.  Even though only 4 times faster then dial up is considered broadband, cable internet is running about 53 times faster.

 

That makes choosing which broadband at what price confusing for most people.  Not only that but recently companies have been offering multiple broadband plans at multiple prices.  Which adds to the confusion that people are experiencing.  Even though the popularity of broadband has almost double since 2000, almost 85% of the people in the United States still dont have Broadband internet in their homes.  And with all this confusion some experts say that it is scaring some people away all together.

 

To help familiarize some people with some terms they may have never heard before here are some that you may run across when shopping for broadband.

• ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line): This is a form of DSL that makes faster data transmissions over copper telephone lines that a normal voiceband modem can do.  The way it does this is by using frequencies that aren't used by voice telephone calls.  Therefor it is passed through the line without interuption and no bottlenecks.

• Cable Broadband: Cable Broadband requires a cable modem in your home.  Instead of using the phone line like ADSL, the cable modem actually uses the cable lines that run to and from your house.  It doesn't share the line with the cable however it has it's own line inside the cable, it is layered on top of the existing cable television network wires.

• Satellite Internet service: This service is used where other forms of internet are not able to get to or move alot.  For instance, if you are in a mobile home and are moving alot obviously you aren't going to be able to have a cable connected to your vehicle.  This is the same for boats also.  Unfortunetly there are some side effects of having a internet that isn't hard wired to your computer, you can come across something called Rain fade.  This is where rain actually interferes with the signal that is going from your moble device to the satellite.  Another down side to this is "Line of Sight" this means exactly what it says, if the mobile vehicle cannot "see" the satellite meaning have a clear straight shot to it your internet will not work.  This happens because there is no path that the information follows to get to where its going.  It is kinda just shot out there in hopes the satellite recieves it.

 

Now that some of that is out of the way hopefully you have a little better understanding of what you are looking for.  The next thing you need to do is to Compare Broadband Plans.  Depending on where you live there may be different Broadband plan providers.  Some of the more popular ones may be Warner Cable, AT&T, Comcast, Earthlink, Verizon and some others.  The best thing you can do is get on the internet and do a search for Compare Broadband Plans (insert local area).  This will lead you in the correct direction.
